The curriculum of the M.A. program in French Applied Linguistics offers a variety of courses in French and francophone languages and cultures in interdisciplinary collaboration with faculty in the Department of French & Italian and other programs and units on campus, including but not limited to the Departments of Linguistics, Spanish & Portuguese, Anthropology, and Communication. Building on the Department of French & Italian's focus on the languages and cultures of France and the francophone world, the curriculum also has strong cultural and Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE) components.

Required course work (32 hours):

  • Introduction to the Linguistic Sciences (LING 400, 4 credit hours, online) or equivalent course work
  • One course (4 credit hours) in any area of French Linguistics offered in the Department of French & Italian. Recent course offerings have included:
    • Topics in the History of Romance Language (FR/RMLG 417)
    • Language and Minorities in Europe (FR 418)
    • Studies in French Linguistics (FR 529, topics vary)
  • One course (4 credit hours) in any area of Language Learning in SLATE offered in the Department of French & Italian. Recent course offerings have included:
    • Techniques in Translation (FR 419)
    • Theories in Second Language Acquisition (FR 584)
    • Seminar in Second Language Learning (FR 588)
  • Two courses (8 credit hours) offered by the Department of French & Italian at the 400- or the 500-level in French and francophone culture and/or literature. Recent course offerings have included:
    • French Studies (FR 543)
    • Seminar in Francophonie (FR 576)
    • Seminar in French Literature (FR 578)
  • The remaining courses (12 credit hours) are selected in consultation with the advisor from courses relevant to French Applied Linguistics offered in affiliated departments, programs, or units. Recent course offerings have included:
    • Introduction to Romance Linguistics (RMLG 465)
    • Gender and Language (CMN 432)
    • Language and Culture (ANTH 512)

Applicants to the M.A. program may request the transfer of credit for up to two graduate-level courses (8 credit hours) taken at an outside institution.
