Fellowship Opportunities

The Department of French & Italian of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign offers highly competitive, personalized funding packages to all admitted graduate students. All admitted students receive a tuition waiver and guaranteed financial aid for 4 to 6 years in the form of either fellowships or teaching and research assistantships. In addition, all admitted students receive guaranteed summer funding. Advanced graduate students are also eligible for conference travel support and research travel support.

Prospective graduate students are eligible for additional competitive fellowships offered by our Graduate College. Qualified applicants need take no action beyond applying to the graduate program of their choice. The Department automatically nominates top applicants for all fellowships.

Financial Aid

All graduate students in good academic standing receive two years of guaranteed of financial support toward the M.A. degree and an additional four years of support toward completion of the Ph.D.

Teaching Assistantships are the most common form of graduate student support at Illinois. The usual appointment requires teaching three courses during the academic year.

Research Assistantships require the recipient to assist with a faculty member's research for a specific number of hours per week. A research assistantship may be combined with a teaching assistantship. Research assistantships are not normally available to first-year graduate students.

Tuition and Fee Waivers are included in all fellowship, teaching assistantship, and research assistantship awards.
