LAS Alumna and ESPN sports anchor Michele Steele got the idea of taking a job as a teacher of English in France after she took a Francophone literature in the Department during her senior year. “When French professor Dr. Alain Fresco (Emeritus, French) inquired what I would be doing after graduation, and I replied, “putting off a fabulous career,” he quite seriously said I should apply to be an English teacher in French schools. It’s a program that’s a little under the radar but run by the State Department and the French government [Teaching Assistant Program in France or TAPIF]. I applied, was accepted, and spent two truly glorious years in the Loire Valley and then in Martinique. The French know how to live, and that experience shaped me for the rest of my life.” Michele Steele (BA, 2000, Economics) is a reporter and has worked as a national correspondence and a sports anchor for ESPN since 2011.
